The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides the data used by several federal agencies for various publications and programs. This document explains some of the programs that are based upon this data, including the Gas Guzzler taxes of the IRS and the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) program. The US Department of Energy also uses the EPA fuel economy data when creating the annual Fuel Economy Guide which helps consumers to make better informed choices when it comes to the overall efficiency of their vehicles.
