This news story was broadcast on Morning Edition on National Public Radio in 2008. Christopher Joyce discusses the difficulties faced by those urging Americans to become more environmentally conscious and energy efficient. Joyce describes what happens when oil prices go up: suddenly people are concerned about their fuel consumption. However, as soon as prices begin to go down, we forget all of our previous concerns. The main challenge is how to make energy efficiency seem like a smart choice rather than a sacrifice.

About Earthship Biotecture

40 years of research and development of self-sufficient housing made from recycled materials.

Development of Earth friendly and people friendly community living concepts that require little or no mortgage payment and no utility bills.

Mission:

To evolve the way humans live on this planet by evolving existing methods of living, home by home.

To make small, believable steps toward slowing down and ultimately reversing the negative impact of human development as it relates to the Earth’s ability to continue to support life.

To present these steps in a way that affords easy understanding and inspires people to act.

To empower people to make positive changes in their own lives to reduce their personal effect on global warming.

To specifically design and build homes that...

  • Heat and cool themselves naturally via solar/thermal dynamics.
  • Collect their own power from the sun and wind.
  • Harvest their own water from rain and snow melt.
  • Contain and treat their own sewage on site.
  • Produce a significant amount of food.
  • Are constructed using the byproducts of modern society like cans, bottles and tires.
